History of The PARA: Formation of The Parachute Regiment |
 |
| |
In the middle of 1942 Major General Browning decided that airborne troops should have some form of distinctive headwear, and that 1st Airborne Division should posses its own emblem. He commissioned Major Edward Seago, then a well known artist, to produce the now famous design of the mythical warrior Bellerophon riding Pegasus, his winged steed.
By the middle of 1942, the fledgling airborne forces had grown rapidly, and it was felt the the parachute battalions should have their own parent regiment. Accordingly, The Parachute Regiment was formed on 1st August 1942, and became part of the Army Air Corps along with the Glider Pilot Regiment.
